Tulum Airport (TQO)

The airport opened in December 2023 as part of the same federal programme that built the Maya Train, and it is operated by GAFSACOMM — Grupo Aeroportuario, Ferroviario, de Servicios Auxiliares y Conexos Olmeca-Maya-Mexica — a state company under the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional. The site includes a military air base alongside the civil terminal, which is normal for the airports built under that programme.

In scale it is the second airport of the Yucatán peninsula, built for something like four million passengers a year. In practice that means a modern, uncrowded terminal with fewer flights in it than the size suggests — and a much shorter walk from gate to kerb than Cancún's.

Who flies there

The carriers that have operated TQO include American Airlines, Delta, United and Spirit from the United States; Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobús and Mexicana domestically; and WestJet from Canada, with Toronto and Calgary services. US routings have included Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Miami, Houston and Dallas.

Schedules at a young airport move around more than at an established one — seasonal routes appear and disappear — so treat any list, including this one, as a starting point and check the airline's own timetable for your dates.

A pre-booked private transfer is what most visitors use, arranged with the hotel or a transfer company before the flight; you meet a driver in arrivals and the price is fixed in advance, which removes the one thing this coast is bad at. A taxi from the rank works too, on the same terms as everywhere else in Tulum: there is no meter and no published tariff, so agree the number before the door closes.

A rental car collected at the airport makes sense if your trip includes Cobá or Sian Ka'an; it makes less sense if you are staying on the beach road, where parking is paid and scarce.

The drive into town runs 30 to 40 minutes on our own estimate, longer to the beach strip because you come back out to the highway and down the beach road. Nobody publishes a fixed airport-to-town fare, which is why this page does not print one.

It is worth it on a short trip, where 90 minutes of highway each way is a meaningful share of the holiday; with small children, for the same reason; and on any itinerary that keeps you south of Playa del Carmen the whole time.

It is not automatically worth it if the fare difference is large, if you want a wide choice of departure times, or if you are starting with a few days in Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres anyway. Cancún's schedule depth is the thing TQO cannot match yet, and the ADO bus south from Cancún airport is a well-run, cheap, air-conditioned option that ends at the terminal on Avenida Tulum in the middle of town.

The Maya Train also reaches Tulum, with a station west of Highway 307. Its fares are sold only inside its own booking engine, and no public fare table was readable on trenmaya.gob.mx when we checked on 29 August 2026, so this site prints no figure for it.
